                             ------------
CORRECTIONS AND CHANGES TO THE "USER'S GUIDE"

Page Correction

18, 96, The arrangement of the items on the Pedigree Chart Options
113 screen changed after the manual was printed. Included with
your package are stickers that contain the new screens.
Please put them into the "User's Guide" on the appropriate
          pages.

25 The introduction to "Converting a File from an Earlier
Version of Personal Ancestral File," implies that you can
convert files from Personal Ancestral File 2.31 only.
However, you can convert files from versions 2.0, 2.2,
          2.3, and 2.31.

26 In step 2 of "Converting a File from an Earlier Version of
Personal Ancestral File," part e says to "Type a name of
up to eight characters. Press Enter." Instead, it should
read "Type a name of up to eight characters. Press F1."

97 Minor changes were made to the family group record after
          the manual was printed.

98-99 The following changes were made to the options screens for
          printing family group records:

          - On the Associated Family Group Records Options and the
Pedigree Family Group Records Only Options screens, the
options Families to print--Beginning and Ending changed
to Families to print--Beginning MRIN and Ending MRIN.

To fill out these options, you must know the MRINS of
the families you want to print. Type the lowest MRIN
after Beginning MRIN and the highest MRIN after Ending
              MRIN.

Important! Personal Ancestral File does not print
family group records for all of the families between
the two MRINS you specify. It only prints family group
records for families who appear on the associated
pedigree charts and whose MRINS fall between the range
              of MRINS you specified.

          - The Pedigree Family Group Records Options screen now
contains the option "Number of generations per page
(4/5/6)." Type the number of generations per page that
              the pedigree chart contains.

                                       1
              - If you print full source citations, you can now select
which source comments to print. (Source comments
include information in the Source Comments field of the
Source Description and the Actual text and Comments
fields of the Individual Reference.) After "-if full
source" type A to print all comments, ! To print only
comments marked with an exclamation point, or N to not
                print any source comments.

100 You can print the associated family group records when you
print a descendancy chart. The "Families to print" options
work as described in the description for pages 98-99,
          previous.

You also have the same option to select which source
          citations to print.

102 The Incomplete Individual Ordinances List includes
individuals without dates or text (i.e. Infant, Child,
Stillborn, etc.) in the baptism, endowment, or sealing-to-
parents fields. This list does not compare the age of
individuals with the current date to determine if they are
under age eight or age eighteen, so these individuals will
          be included on the list.

102, 112 A report called the Family Ordinance Summary has been
added to the LDS Reports menu. This report shows five
generations of a family and what ordinances have been done
          for each person.

115, 148 You cannot print an MRIN Sorted List from Custom Reports.
This applies to both printing Custom Reports from the
Print command and from the Focus command.

118, 119 These pages show the Review/Print Custom Reports screen
120 instead of the Edit Custom Report screen. These two
screens look almost the same. However, you cannot change
an existing report or design a new report from the
          Review/Print screen.

To change (edit) an existing report, show the Review/Print
Custom Reports screen, and press E.

To design a new report, follow the steps outlined under
"Designing a Custom Report," on pages 117 to 118 of the
"User's Guide." The steps work the same, even though the
incorrect screen appears on page 118.

127, 133 The wording on the What to Do with Missing Birth Dates and
Places screens changed after the manual was printed.

154 The explanation for the option "Starting RIN in Small
Pedigree Screen" should read as follows:

                                       2
Type the RIN of the record that you want to appear first
in the principal position when you open the file. (For
example, type 1 to have RIN 1 appear.) If you type 0
(zero), the record that was in the principal position when
you exited or opened a different file will appear.

156 The option "Paper-feed type" now has two possible
settings. You can either type C for continuous feed paper,
or you can type S for single sheets. You cannot type ?.

162 The Scan File for Problems screen changed after the manual
was printed. The updated screen has separate lines for the
name of the file and for the drive and directory. This
change makes this screen consistent with similar screens
in other parts of the program.

CORRECTIONS TO THE "GETTING STARTED" MANUAL

On pages 6 to 7, the section "Adding an Icon (Shortcut) to Open a
File in Windows 95" is incorrect.

Below are the correct steps. These steps assume that you have
installed Personal Ancestral File from Windows 95 according to the
steps on page 4 of the "Getting Started" Manual and that you will be
adding an icon for an existing Personal Ancestral File 3.0 file.

1. On the Start menu, click the right mouse button.

2. Select Open.

3. Double-click on the Programs icon.

4. Double-click on the Personal Ancestral File icon.

5. From the File menu, select New.

6. Select Shortcut.

7. Type the full path and file name of the data file you want to
   open, and click on Next.

   For example, type C:\PAF3\DATA\BRANDT.PAF

Hint: If you have many data files, type the drive and directory
where the data files are stored (but no specific file name). When
you select the shortcut, a window containing all of your data
files will appear. You can then select the file you want to open.

8. Type a name for the shortcut, and click on Finish.

For example, you might type Brandt Family Records as the name.

IF YOU INSTALL PERSONAL ANCESTRAL FILE 3.0 THEN UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 95

If you install Personal Ancestral File 3.0 with the DOS or Windows
3.1 install procedures and later upgrade to Windows 95, it is
recommended that you reinstall Personal Ancestral File with the
Windows 95 install procedure. See page 4 of the "Getting Started"
manual for instructions.

Reinstalling Personal Ancestral File will not delete any of your
data, nor will it change any of your preference settings. It will,
however, make it easier for you to set up Shortcuts to open the
program and data files.

IF YOU WANT TO PUT THE PROGRAM ICON ON THE WINDOWS 95 DESKTOP

1. On the Start menu, click the right mouse button.

2. Select Open.

3. Double-click on the Programs icon.

4. Double-click on the Personal Ancestral File icon.

5. Click on the Personal Ancestral File program icon with the right
mouse button, and drag the icon to the Windows 95 desktop.

6. Release the right mouse button, and select the "Create shortcut
here" option from the menu that will appear.

                             ------------
IF YOU USED EARLIER VERSIONS OF PERSONAL ANCESTRAL FILE

- In previous versions of Personal Ancestral File, you typed the
surname (last name) first and the given name (first and middle
names) second. In Personal Ancestral File 3.0, you type the given
name first and the surname second.

- Personal Ancestral File 3.0 does not support Research Data Filer.
Consequently, you will need to use your operating system (DOS or
Windows) to make a backup copy of your Research Data Filer
   information.

- Personal Ancestral File 3.0 has word wrap in the Notes feature.
This means that the cursor automatically goes to the next line
when you keep typing at the end of a line. (This is like a word
processor.) You only press Enter when you want to start a
different line or a new paragraph.

When the cursor goes automatically to the next line, it puts in a
soft return. When you press Enter, it puts in a hard return.

                                       4
However, in previous versions of the program, you had to press the
Enter key to move the cursor to the next line (like a typewriter).
This put a hard return at the end of every line of text.

After you convert a file from a previous version of Personal
Ancestral File into version 3.0, your notes will still have the
hard returns. If any of these line breaks seem awkward to you, you
can use the Delete and Backspace keys to delete the hard return
and change it to a soft return.

- The list of printers in Personal Ancestral File 3.0 is different
from the list in version 2.31. The help screen for the printer
list shows the printer categories that were used in 2.31 and the
corresponding printers for 3.0. To find this Help screen, follow
   these steps:

   1. Go to the Printing Preferences screen.

(If you are at the Small Pedigree screen, press Y (utilitY
menu). Then select "Change Program and Printer Preferences,"
and press F1 to move from the Personal Ancestral File
Preferences screen to the Printing Preferences screen.)

   2. Move the cursor to either Printer 1 or Printer 2.

   3. Press F3 (Printer List).

   4. Press Alt+H.

                       CANON BUBBLEJET PRINTERS

On the Printing Preferences screen (shown on page 155 of the "User's Guide")
you select the printers you will use. If you have a Canon BubbleJet printer,
you can select one of the following options:
- Canon BubbleJet. If you select the Canon BubbleJet option, you must
change dipswitch 11 on your printer to Bubblejet mode. Most Bubblejet
printers are set to the Epson emulation mode. See your printer manual for
  instructions.

- Epson 24-pin. If you do not want to change the dipswitch on your printer,
  select the Epson 24-pin option.

See pages 152 to 157 of the "User's Guide" for instructions on how to change
your program and printer preferences.

LONG PERSONAL NAMES AND PLACE-NAMES ON SCREENS AND REPORTS

Some screens and reports can display only a limited number of
characters for personal and place-names.

                                       5
If a name does not fit on a screen or report, Personal Ancestral File
shortens it so that part of the name will appear on the screen or
report. For example, Personal Ancestral File may remove the spaces
between the names or take out some of the letters.

The name in the file is still the same as you typed it. If you
display the appropriate individual or marriage record, you will see
that the name has not changed from how you typed it.

                   LDS ORDINANCES ON PEDIGREE CHARTS

The following abbreviations appear on a pedigree chart with LDS
ordinance information. If the letter appears, it means that the
particular ordinance has been completed or is not needed.

B Baptism
E Endowment
S Sealing to spouse
P Sealing to parents
C Children's individual ordinances (all individual ordinances for
the person's children have been performed.

                             ------------
                             PARENT LINKS

In Personal Ancestral File 3.0 you can link a child to more than one
set of parents. This allows you to keep track of a person's
biological lines, adopted lines, sealing lines, and so forth.

Each child in a family has a "Parent Link" that describes the child's
relationship to a set of parents. You can choose one of six Parent
Links: Biological, Adoptive, Guardian, Sealing, Link Challenged by
Others, or Link Disproved.

Biological is the default link. Therefore, if a child in your file
has one set of parents, Personal Ancestral File assumes the parent
link is Biological. If this is not so, use the Parent Link command to
change it (see p. 40 of the "User's Guide" for instructions).

The Small Pedigree screen, the main screen in Personal Ancestral
File, shows the children's Parent Link. If the Parent Link is blank,
it means the Parent Link is "Biological." All other links appear on
the screen.

When you add another set of parents for a child, Personal Ancestral
File automatically asks you to select a parent link as part of the
Add process. You can choose "Biological" for only one set of parents.

                                       6
                             ------------
                           MULTIPLE PARENTS

When a person in your file is linked to more than one set of parents,
you can choose which set of parents appears on the Small Pedigree
screen (see pp. 38-40 of the "User's Guide").

However, the Large Pedigree screen always shows the first set of
parents. To show a different set of parents, use the Rearrange
command to change the parents you want shown first to be the first
set of parents (see pp. 62-63 of the "User's Guide" for
instructions).

When you use the export, import, or focus list features to select a
person's ancestors, Personal Ancestral File asks which parents you
want. The program then selects the person, the parents you chose, and
the ancestors of the parents you selected. If any of the parents'
ancestors have more than one set of parents, Personal Ancestral File
selects only the first set of parents and their ancestors. If you
want to select all of the ancestors of each set of parents, you will
have to select them separately.

                             ------------
PREPARING TO SUBMIT INFORMATION TO ANCESTRAL FILE

Before you submit information to Ancestral File, please do the
following:

- Check your file for duplicate records. See Chapter 10 of the
"User's Guide" for information about how to do this.

- Print a List of Possible Record Problems. See pages 107 to 108 for
a description of this report and pages 111 to 114 for how to print
it. Check all potential problems listed on the report, and correct
   any errors.

- During the export process, Personal Ancestral File asks if you
want to check your file for possible problems. Please run this
check. It can find and fix problems related to the physical
structure of your file. These problems could prevent Ancestral
File from being able to read your submission. See pages 160 to 161
of the "User's Guide" for more information about this check.

                             ------------
            CORRECTING INFORMATION FROM ANCESTRAL FILE(TM)

Types of Corrections You Can Make

Personal Ancestral File 3.0 allows you to import information from
Ancestral File, correct it, and then submit the corrections back to
Ancestral File. With Personal Ancestral File 3.0, you can:

- Add or change a person's name and title.

                                       7
- Change the name of a person listed in Ancestral File as "Living."
Please note that you should spell the name exactly as it was
submitted to Ancestral File. Otherwise, the correction may not be
   accepted.

- Change the sex code of a child. If you need to change the sex code
of parents or spouses, you must submit them on paper. See the
document "Correcting Information in Ancestral File" for specific
   instructions.

- Add or change a person's birth, christening, death, burial, or
   ordinance information.

- Merge duplicate records (two or more records for the same person).
Personal Ancestral File will keep track of the Ancestral File
numbers (AFNs) of the merged records and send that information to
Ancestral File when you submit corrections.

- Remove individuals from families.

You cannot make the following types of corrections in Personal
Ancestral File. Instead, you can use the Edit feature in the
Ancestral File program itself or submit the corrections on paper:

- Add or change a couple's marriage information.

- Delete records from Ancestral File.

- Register a research interest.

- Update the name and address of a submitter or interested
   researcher.

- Mark a submitter or interested researcher as deceased.

Correcting versus Contributing

The processes for correcting information and contributing information
for Ancestral File are different.

- When you contribute information, you add new information about a
person in Ancestral File. For example, you can add a missing death
date, missing family members, and so forth. You can also
   contribute new families and pedigrees.

- When you correct information, you change information that is in
Ancestral File. For example, you change an incorrect birthplace.

Therefore, you cannot change incorrect information that is already in
Ancestral File simply by resubmitting that person's record. Consider
the following example:

                                       8
You find your great-grandfather, William Henry Brandt, in Ancestral
File. His death date is missing, his birthplace is incorrect, and his
parents are not listed. You decide to contribute all of the
information you have about William Henry and his ancestors.
When Ancestral File receives your contribution, all of the new
information about William Henry Brandt will be added to his Ancestral
File record. Here, his death date and ancestors will be added.

However, since William Henry Brandt's Ancestral File record already
has a birthplace, the program ignores the birthplace in the record
you contributed and keeps the birthplace from the original Ancestral
File record. If you want the correct birthplace to appear, you must
submit it as a correction.

If You Originally Imported the Records into Another Version or
Program

Personal Ancestral File 3.0 keeps track of all of the records you
import from Ancestral File. When you change them, the program notes
the changes so that you can submit them as corrections to Ancestral
File.

No other personal genealogical computer program does this, not even
Personal Ancestral File 2.3.1 for the Macintosh.

Therefore, if you imported records from Ancestral File into another
program or into another version of Personal Ancestral File and then
changed some of the information in the records, the changes were not
noted. Even if you convert these files to Personal Ancestral File
3.0, you cannot submit them as corrections unless you open each
individual record you changed and press F1 to resave it.

Steps to Correcting Ancestral File with Personal Ancestral File 3.0

To make corrections with Personal Ancestral File 3.0, follow these
steps.

1. While you are still in Ancestral File, press F2 (Print/copy).

2. Select "C. Create GEDCOM file..."

3. Follow the instructions on the screen to create a GEDCOM file.

4. In Personal Ancestral File 3.0, use the Import command to upload
the GEDCOM file onto your computer (see pp. 71 to 78 of the
   "User's Guide").

Hint: If you have a lot of information in Personal Ancestral File
3.0, it may be easier to manage the correction process if you
import the GEDCOM file into a new, empty file.

5. Make the desired corrections (see pp. 59 to 64 of the "User's
Guide"). Remember, you cannot correct a couple's marriage and
sealing information with Personal Ancestral File 3.0.

                                       9
To add people to families, see pages 31 to 40.

To edit individual records, see pages 59 to 60.

To remove individuals from families, see pages 67 to 68.

To merge duplicate records, see pages 79 to 88.

6. Use the Export command to create a file of records to send back to
   Ancestral File.

Use the "Corrected" option in the Ancestral File submission
   process (see p. 126).

Note: The "Corrected" option does not include new people you have
added to families you obtained from Ancestral File. You can use
the "New" option to submit those people.

7. Write the following information on the label of each disk:

    - Ancestral File Corrections

    - Your name, address, and telephone number

    - The genealogical software program you are using, including the
version number (for example, Personal Ancestral File 3.)

    - Your computer's operating system (for example, MS-DOS 5.0)

If the GEDCOM file takes more than one disk, write the above
information on each disk. Also indicate the disk number and the
total number of disks (for example, 1 of 2 and 2 of 2).

8. Mail the disk to:

REMOVING A FILE FROM THE PAF FILE LIST

When you delete a file from your computer as described on page 29 of
the "User's Guide," Personal Ancestral File also deletes the name of
the file from the PAF File List, which appears on the Open File
screen.

However, if you want to remove the name of a file from the PAF File
List without deleting the file itself, you will have to use a text
editor to modify the PAFBASES.DAT file.

1. Start the text editor.

                                      10
2. Open the file PAFBASES.DAT.

3. Delete the file names that you do not want.

4. Save the file, and start Personal Ancestral File.

Note: If you use a word processor instead of a text editor, save
PAFBASES.DAT as a DOS or ASCII file. If you do not, Personal
Ancestral File will not be able to use the modified file.

                     REPRINTING A PEDIGREE CHART

When you need to reprint one pedigree chart that belongs in a series of
charts you have already printed (i.e. Chart 5 of 200), do the following.

1. On the Pedigree Chart Options screen, for the "Number of generations
to print?", type one generation higher than the "Number of generations
per page." For example, type 6 for the "Number of generations to
print?" if your charts were printed with 5 generations per page.

2. Using the chart number information at the top of the chart you want
to reprint, complete the "What chart do you want to start with?"
    section.

3. In the "What range of charts do you want to print?" section, type 1
for the "Beginning chart" AND type 1 for the "Ending chart."

4. After completing the fields, press the F1 key. You will be asked to
select the Beginning Individual. Select the individual who is the
first individual on the pedigree chart that you want to reprint.
